New ASU Downtown campus immigration art exhibit

[source: Corey Schubert, ASU College of Public Programs media manager] ASU's Downtown Phoenix campus is offering an exciting new arts exhibit, "Migration: Immigration, Giving Honor to Cultures and Communities," now through May 16 on the second floor of ASU's University Center, 411 N. Central Ave.

Artists from urban Phoenix and community partners of the downtown campus teamed with ASU for this free exhibit which aims to use art to encourage open-minded dialogue about an important and divisive current issue.

More than 60 new works are on display, with about 100 more arriving from the ASU West Campus and South Mountain High School in Phoenix in time for an Urban Gallery Exhibition on April 3.

Dean Friedman presents Greater Phoenix Forward to the Phoenix City Council

Dean Debra Friedman of the College of Public Programs will share the highlights of the Greater Phoenix Forward report with the Phoenix City Council during a meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Phoenix City Hall, 200 W. Washington St.

The report offers community and policy leaders and human services practitioners the latest data and new perspectives for understanding the Valley’s human services infrastructure and a “big picture” of future needs.

The meeting is open to the public and will be broadcast live on PHX 11, Phoenix’s government channel, on Cox and Qwest cable to all subscribers within city limits.

Her 15-minute presentation is tentatively set to begin at about 2:20 p.m., depending on the agenda.

Greater Phoenix Forward seeks to help guide public policy decisions based on sound research, objective analyses, and public discourse. It contains:

• Data describing human services structures and functions in Maricopa County
• Trends for the populations who provide and use these services
• Analyses of how to sustain the present level and quality of human services
• A glimpse of how current service trends could play out by 2012
• A presentation of critical policy challenges for the future

ASU buildings to get refurbished

The East Valley Tribune reported earlier this month about eight buildings on the ASU Tempe campus that are going to get much-needed renovations. They are:

• The Cowden Family Resources building (COWDN), located north of Hayden Library
• Durham Languages & Literature building (LL), adjacent to Old Main
• Physical Sciences Center, H wing (PS-H), adjacent to University Drive
• Physical Sciences Center, F wing (PS-F), located south of PS-H
• Schwada Classroom Office Building (SCOB), located south of Noble Science Library
• Murdock Lecture Hall (MUR), located northeast of the Memorial Union
• Physical Education Building West (PEBW), located east of the Memorial Union
• Physical Education Building East (PEBE), located east of the ASU Bookstore

The College of Public Programs on KBAQ

I was listening to KBAQ 89.5 (Phoenix's Classical music station) and the traffic report just shy of 8:50am was sponsored by the College of Public Programs at Arizona State University (my college)! The DJ, Stirling Beeaff, mentioned the Masters in Nonprofit Leadership, but I think that the College's other Masters' programs get their equal billing, too.

Call me crazy, but I was excited!

Robert Denhardt first Coor Chair

Dr. Robert Denhardt, the director of the School of Public Affairs and Regents' Professor, has been named the first Lattie and Elva Coor Presidential Chair giving a $1mln endowment to develop scholarship and education in leadership and ethics across Arizona State University.

ASU's School of Sustainability featured on NBC's Nightly News

ASU’s School of Sustainability is continuing to garner national attention, this time featured on NBC Nightly News.

Anne Thompson, NBC's Chief Environmental Affairs correspondent, highlighted how the nation's first-of-its-kind school is providing a highly unique approach to education, the challenges for this generation of students, and the opportunities that await graduates in the green economy.

NBC spent two days at ASU in February. The comprehensive visit gave them an in-depth look at key facets of ASU's sustainability portfolio including:

• Student activism (ASU's Student Sustainability Coalition)
• Entrepreneurship and jobs in the green economy
• Tipping points in population behaviors (water consumption and urban growth)
• Urban heat island research
• Campus sustainability; reducing ASU’s carbon footprint

The producers interviewed undergraduate students, School of Sustainability students, professors, administrators, and ASU President Dr. Michael Crow.

The School of Public Affairs was featured in ASU Insight, ASU's newspaper of record.

Urban planners draw upon School of Public Affairs
expertise
It may not seem like the Valley has much in common with cities in the Middle East or Australia. But large urban areas springing up in desert locales share many common issues – water supply, pollution problems and affordable housing – among them.

That’s where the School of Public Affairs in the College of Public Programs can make a difference, through partnerships and by recognizing those who serve the public good. The school was instrumental in recently nominating David Smith, Maricopa County manager, for a National Public Service award that he ultimately won. Smith spearheaded a major turnaround in Maricopa County from a place that was described as a “poster child for bad government” in Governing Magazine about 10 years ago into a county described by the same magazine as one of the two best-run county governments in the United States.

“The award is a premier award for a public service practitioner,” says Robert Denhardt, director of the School of Public Affairs. “It’s considered a lifetime achievement award. It really is wonderful recognition.”
